RK Recognized for Innovative Design AWMAC Award of Excellence

On January 21, Riddell Kurczaba (RK) was awarded the Design Innovation Award at the inaugural AWMAC Northern Alberta Awards of Excellence. The Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC) selected RK's contemporary design for AEMERA's tenant improvements in Edmonton, Alberta.

The AEMERA project included a vision to create a fresh and welcoming new space for employees and clients that would facilitate a collaborative and creative atmosphere. The organization's focus in environmental reporting allowed our designers to bring in natural features into the office interior.

"We created a feature at the reception entrance that incorporates a planted detail on the stone-cladded wall, where the wall looks like it broke off at the bottom and got extended out to allow for the nature to erupt from within, " said Natalia Pakin-Amer, RK Senior Designer. Natalia and Junior Designer Joanna Opara completed this project within a tight deadline by creating a fully detailed design package and construction drawings for public tender within two months.

The entrance was also grounded and softened by an upside down L-build out with a walnut veneer and tiny pin LED lights that brighten the area. Wood elements were extended throughout the space and colour was added through paint, uniquely patterned fabrics, carpeting and resin panels.

The 19,000 sq. ft. space, spread over two floors of an existing high-rise downtown building, was successful in reflecting AEMERA's organizational culture and brand.
